Complete mechanical differential for the PR Racing SC201 model.
This differential is sold complete. We will need to fill it with oil, of the desired viscosity, so that the differential operates with the precise stiffness.
The mechanical differential, consisting of satellite and planetary gears, is included as standard in the PRO version of the PR Racing SC201 chassis. The standard version of this chassis originally includes an adjustable ball differential.
What is the difference between an adjustable ball differential and a mechanical differential, in terms of performance and efficiency?
The adjustable ball differential has a very fine operation and allows you to tighten or loosen it as desired. You can leave it loose, allowing it to slip, when the track grip is low, or you can tighten it a little more when you're in medium or high grip situations.
A loose ball differential provides greater steering control, while a tight ball differential, with its stiff feel, reduces steering response slightly. The ball differential can slip, thus acting as a small clutch that doesn't transmit the power from the drive ring gear all at once. This results in smoother acceleration and deceleration.
On the other hand, the ball differential requires maintenance, as it consists of discs and balls, usually ceramic, that rub against each other with varying degrees of force (adjustable). Both the balls, which can become deformed, and the discs, which become grooved and cause the differential to lose much of its smoothness, must be replaced periodically.
The mechanical differential, on the other hand, doesn't slip or absorb the power it receives from the ring gear. It transmits the same power it receives. It does, however, act as a differential, distributing that power to one wheel or the other. But it doesn't have a clutch effect.
It is recommended when we are in medium or high grip situations on the track.
This differential, commonly called a mechanical differential, consists of planetary and satellite gears and requires virtually no maintenance. This is one of its major advantages over a ball differential.
We will need to play with the viscosity of the silicone oil with which we will fill the mechanical differential to obtain a harder feel (for tracks with more traction) or a softer one (less dense oil, when the grip is not very high and we want the differential effect to be maximum)
